Compared to personalized feedback, grades can negatively impact
students' ability to learn by lowering their self-esteem. One study
conducted by the Education Testing Service found that students who
received just a grade on an assignment reported feeling less capable
than those students who received detailed feedback. By lowering
students' self-confidence, grades can prevent students from achieving
their academic potential.
