In this sentence that beings with “When I looked round the ship too and saw…” what Equiano describes is, in addition to a furnace/copper boiler, are other people who are below the deck with him.  He describes seeing “a multitude of black people of every description chained together.”  And when he describes the looks he sees on their faces, he describes looks of those forlorn.  What readers can infer, thus, is that Equiano’s situation is hopeless and that his fate will be the same as those with whom he is now onboard the ship with.
