 Larry Lehna spent several years in prison. Throughout his essay he talks about "the look" that he had to adopt to hide his feelings. He did not want to show emotions, he only used this kind of mask in which he hid to suppress any type of feeling.

"Nothing could faze me, and nothing did. It was more than a look; it was an attitude that was much more severe than mere stoicism. No emotions in, no emotions out."

When he finally served his sentence, he realized that he couldn't stop wearing this mask, since everyone out there was still treating him like a criminal. Nobody accepted him anywhere. Until he met Noreen Ruehs.
