What is the difference between each starred example? Why is it called citing your source?

Direct quotation is when you take the exact words or phrases from a reading. For example, if the reading says, "I have a feeling we are not in Kansas anymore", you would use that exact quote. Paraphrase is wording the phrases or text in your own way. For example, if the reading says, "I have a feeling we are not in Kansas anymore", you might say that 'Dorothy knew she was no longer in Kansas.' Synopsis is giving a summary of what the text said overall, or giving a general idea. For example, if the reading says, "I have a feeling we are not in Kansas anymore", you might say that 'She was not in Kansas anymore.' When you show where you get your evidence from it would be called 'citing your source'. It is called this because you are presenting (citing) where you got your information from (the source).
