Bookkeeper:
It was the chance of a lifetime. But Will had ruined it for himself. At this time his story begins.
“I’m home” Will’s father excitedly announced.
“Perfect, your just in time for dinner” said Will’s mom.
She had been working on the roast for many hours, and it’s delicious smell filled the small wood house.
“You won’t believe what happened today, I got a raise!” Shouted Will’s dad.
This made her think of how unsuccessful Will was. One year ago, Will was offered a job as an Engineer. He would be the youngest, but they all knew he was genius enough to do it. It required Will to move all the way to Colorado. Will had to turn down the offer because he didn’t have a license to get there. If he had passed his first driving test, he would have been able to go, so, he turned it down not knowing that they would help him pass the test. Little did he know then that that job would have gave him millions of dollars a year. He regretted the decision and wished he could change it. But he might have found just the way to change it. A few days ago, Will found a piece of paper in the attic when he was cleaning it. It said that there was a hidden door in the shop he worked at, and it was believed that in that door there was a hidden time machine. His mom, however, thought this was a bunch of malarkey and threw the paper away. When she wasn’t looking Will retrieved the paper and stuffed it in his jacket pocket.
Will was studying hard in the living room for his driving test. He had barely failed it once and was determined he was going to pass it this time. There was nothing that would distract him from his studies, until it’s dinner time. “clink” went the forks as the table was being set. Then Will knew it was time for dinner. As Will ate the juicy pot roast and sweet caramelized carrots, he began to dread going to work later on. The old building, he worked at had air as thick as tar and it smelled like mildew. Will Shivered as to shake off the thought. When he finished his meal, he plopped back down on the shaggy green couch and began studying again, but his mom stopped him.
“Isn’t it time for you to get to work” she pointed out.
“Oh yeah, I better get going. I’ll see you tonight.” yelled Will as he ran out the door and hopped on his bike.
Will pedaled against the cool fall wind of St. Augustine. He always thought it was refreshing compared to the hot summers Florida had. It was a calm and mostly quiet ride. There were few cars out because everyone was at home eating dinner. It was just Will and the gentle brush of the palm trees. Will looked to his right at the Halloween Store. That would be the only store open other than The Old Store. Will took a left at St. Louis Rd. and pulled up to the bike rack in front of The Old Store. He walked in and his boss (Margaret) greeted him with a friendly smile. He went to the back of the store and laid his stuff down.
“How did Margaret feel about you being late today?” Asked Ethan.
Ethan was a friend of Wills and they applied for the job at the same time.
“She smiled; she knows I am not always late like you” Will said jokingly.
Will began walking to the front, he pushed the double doors and he was back in the small room. He walked up to Mable and asked what the plans were for today.
“Go help Alyss move the shelves, she already got most of the items off.” She said.
Will started walking toward where Alyss was when he tripped. Alyss began giggling but then apologized for her “rudeness”, but she still had a grin on her face. She had secretly liked Will, and it was hard to keep her feelings about him inside.
“Only if Will noticed and liked me back” she sighed quietly to herself.
Will began removing the stuff off the shelves, when Margaret yelled, “I’m going now, make sure to lock up the shop before you go.”
“Okay.” they all said together in harmony.
She closed the door and went out into the cool fall of St. Augustine, glad to leave the small rusty shop. Once the last item was taken off the shelves, Will and Alyss began to move the shelves away. Alyss blushed as she saw Will’s strength. It was almost like Will was carrying all the weight for her. After they finished, they both went to Mabel and asked her what to do next. Margaret left Mable in charge when she’s gone.
