They may or may not be verbal or non-verbal, but at the same time, they prevent the passage of information from one point to another. Examples of barriers of communication can be cultural differences, language barriers, physical barriers such as a wall, lack of focus, or lack of concentration or attention.

On the other hand, misconceptions about communication are the belief in a certain myth or sayings without it being necessarily true. They are different from "barriers of communication in that misconceptions have to do with popular beliefs while barriers are mostly the physical or verbal "walls" that prevent the information flow. Examples of misconception about communication can be the belief in certain myths such as a black cat as an omen of bad luck, sharing information is the same as having a communication, or the belief that communication can solve all problems.
