I would describe the ending as essentially unhappy because there was no love between the Helmer's marriage even though Mr. Helmer made it seem like it, he just wanted the idea of loving her. The children are also left with no mother and the last recollection that the children will have of their mother is her not wanting to play with them which is tragic.
