Prompts for "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne I have a summer assignment for my English class and I have to answer prompts about it. I honestly can't be bothered to read it so I just came on here with the hopes of someone helping me. I'm offering 75 points and a Brainliest answerfor it because I really need this done as soon as possible (It's due Saturday).

The book I have to answer the prompts for is "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Here are the questions:

1. Nathaniel Hawthorne was a descendant of Puritans himself (one of his ancestors was a judge during the Salem Witch Trials), but he has some criticisms for their values and way of thinking. Begin by giving a description (in your own words and from a variety of sources) of who the Purtians were, their goals in the "New Land", and an overview of their beliefs. Then discuss at least one criticism Hawthorne has for the Puritan way of life based on The Scarlet Letter using evidence from the text. Hint: Think about their views on sin, religion, women, discipline, people in authority, etc.  Include a link to your sources at the end.

2. The central symbol in the novel is obviously the scarlet letter itself.  Discuss what the scarlet letter represents using evidence from the text. What theme does this symbol develop?

3. Select one character from The Scarlet Letter, and  identify ONE dominant personality trait for that character. In order to defend the trait you selected, go back into the novel and find THREE quotes that support your chosen trait.  Then discuss how these quotes support/prove the character trait.

4. Tone is defined as the way the author seems to feel about his or her characters, events, cultural implications, and themes. How do you think Hawthorne feels about Hester Prynne’s adultery? Does he condemn or condone her actions? Use evidence from the text to support your argument.

5. What are the themes of The Scarlet Letter? What is the message? What do you think Hawthorne wants others to take away from the story?

Avoid cliches. This answer cannot and should not be pigeonholed to a cliche. This story is more than just “Sin, Knowledge, and the Human Condition” (Sparknotes).  It has layers; layers of complexity. Try to peel away the layers and describe them. Use your own words and ideas to describe what you think Hawthorne's message is.

6. Nathaniel Hawthorne writes during the American time period of Romanticism. In a nutshell, the American Romantic period focuses on the individual, nature, the supernatural, and national pride (keep in mind that America had won its independence just 40ish years prior). In your own words and from a variety of sources, give an overview of the American Romantic period (be sure to use American Romanticism and not just Romanticism, or you'll get a lot of info about the European Romantic period). Then analyze the American Romantic influences present in The Scarlet Letter.  Be sure to include a link to your sources at the end.
