Write a 3-5 paragraph analysis that explains how individual techniques of satire are used in popular culture to make a comment about a subject. You may choose any example of satire that you wish: The Colbert Report, Saturday Night Live, The Onion, The Daily Show, etc... The essay should include a summary of the episode or text, an explanation of teh main criticism, and discussion of at least one of the three rhetorical techniques explored in your lessons: verbal irony, understatement, and/or false premises. You may also address the use of exaggeration if it is evident in the selected episode or text. Part 1: Objective Summary Begin with a one-paragraph summary of the selected piece of satire. Remember, to do the following in your objective summary: Describe the author’s main ideas Explain the satirical nature of the text Explain who or what the text is criticizing Identify the author’s purpose Avoid providing an opinion on the effectiveness of the piece Part 2: Analysis Follow the summary with a 2-4 paragraph analysis of the satirical text. Remember to include the following in your analysis: How does the author use satire to make the argument engaging and effective? Consider whether or not the title indicates that the piece is satirical. If so, how? Is the author using humor, ridicule, or both? Explain. What rhetorical devices does the author use? (E. g., verbal irony, understatement, exaggeration, false premises) Is the satire effective? Why or why not?

4. at the conclusion of frankenstein, robert walton has an encounter with the monster, who arrives after victor frankenstein has died. perhaps surprisingly, the monster mourns his creator and expresses remorse over the fate that victor suffered. the monster pledges to destroy himself and then departs, disappearing as he goes further north. how does the monster’s behavior and attitude in this part of the novel affect the way readers view him? is he sympathetic? is he more hateful because it is only after victor has died that he relents? how does the change in the monster fit with the theme of duality in the novel?
