There are different views that's been portrayed about death in the book, first being of fear and second of false gallantry.

'The Book Thief' is a book written by Markus Zusak. The book is written about the historical period of World War 2. The book is narrated from Death's point of view using the First Person Limited Narration.

In the book, Death said that different humans portrayed him differently. Some feared him while others had fals gallantry.

This is visible when Death introduces himself in the beginning of the book. He urge his audience not to fear him. This suggests that people fear him. Humans are fearful of death. But at other place Death says that some people fear something else more than him, that's why theyy choose to end their lives.

When, in History of the Jewish First Fighter, Death speaks of Max Vandenburg, he says that Vandenburg had false gallantry. It is because Vandenburg said that he would punch a fist on the face of death when he coomes to him.
