This is the paragraph “Arachne and Athena”
Long ago in Greece, there lived a young girl named Arachne. Arachne was not like other girls. She did not enjoy riding horses or reading books. She did not even like building forts! Arachne liked to do only one thing—weave. She wove in the morning. She wove after lunch. Sometimes she even wove long after the last candle had been put out.

“Go to bed!” her mother would shout.

“Oh, mother,” Arachne would answer. Then she would go on weaving. She thought that her work was far more important than sleep. In the morning, she always puffed up with pride when she saw what she had made in the dark.

The cloths she wove were very beautiful. In fact, they were the best in all the land, and news of them traveled fast. So, it was not long before folks showed up at Arachne’s door just to watch her work.

One day, a large crowd gathered around her. They were amazed as, thread by thread, pictures of gardens and meadows appeared on Arachne’s cloth. “Her work is like nothing on earth!” one woman said as she admired it.

Another woman nodded and added, “Surely, Athena must be helping her!”

Everyone knew that this was the highest praise. Athena was the Greek goddess of weaving, after all. However, the woman’s words only made Arachne mad. “This is the work of MY hands,” she huffed. “Athena had nothing to do with it! In fact, I do not think that the goddess could match my skill.”

The people ran off in fright. No one said such things about a goddess, especially Athena. Athena was not only the goddess of weaving; she was also the goddess of war.

“You should be ashamed of yourself!” Arachne’s mother scolded. “Our gifts come from the gods and goddesses, and we should always be thankful.”

“My ‘gift’ came from my own hard work!” Arachne said, stamping her foot.

“Your mother is right, you know,” said a voice.

Startled, Arachne and her mother turned. They thought that everyone had gone. However, a bent old woman stood in the doorway. She pointed her cane at Arachne. “Just because a person’s work is admired does not mean she should fill her head with pride. That leaves no room for wisdom, you know.”

Arachne rolled her eyes and turned back to her loom. “I have enough wisdom to know how I became a great weaver,” she said. "Let Athena come down from her cloud, and I will teach her a thing or two.”

Suddenly, the room went cold. Then, the old lady was no longer old. She was young and beautiful, and she stood straight and tall. Instead of a cane, she held a spear.

“Athena!” Arachne’s mother gasped.

The goddess nodded and turned to Arachne. “What in the world could you teach me? Do you really think that your weaving is better than mine?”

Arachne’s face grew red. However, she refused to be ashamed of the words she had said. So, she tipped her nose into the air. “Yes, I do,” she said.

“Very well, then,” said Athena. “We shall have a contest. You will weave on your loom, and I will weave on mine. When we finish, it will be quite clear who is best.”

Select the correct answer. what opinion about russian society does leo tolstoy express in this excerpt from the death of ivan ilyich? the awful, terrible act of his dying was, he could see, reduced by those about him to the level of a casual, unpleasant, and almost indecorous incident (as if someone entered a drawing room defusing an unpleasant odour) and this was done by that very decorum which he had served all his life long. he saw that no one felt for him, because no one even wished to grasp his position. only gerasim recognized it and pitied him. and so ivan ilyich felt at ease only with him. he felt comforted when gerasim supported his legs (sometimes all night long) and refused to go to bed, saying: "don't you worry, ivan ilyich. i'll get sleep enough later on," or when he suddenly became familiar and exclaimed: "if you weren't sick it would be another matter, but as it is, why should i grudge a little trouble? " gerasim alone did not lie; everything showed that he alone understood the facts of the case and did not consider it necessary to disguise them, but simply felt sorry for his emaciated and enfeebled master. once when ivan ilyich was sending him away he even said straight out: "we shall all of us die, so why should i grudge a little trouble? "—expressing the fact that he did not think his work burdensome, because he was doing it for a dying man and hoped someone would do the same for him when his time came. a. the peasant class in nineteenth-century russia was full of honest and compassionate people. b. educated professionals gained influence in russian society in the nineteenth century. c. in the nineteenth century, middle-class russians were rich and well-educated. d. peasants more readily accepted unpleasant facts of life, while the middle class tried to deny them.
