Ikemefuna who happened to be a closer friend and mentor of Nwonye, the eldest of Okonkwo, was at a point concluded by the village traditional elders, to be the sacrificial lamb to the gods. Ikemefuna, though, unknowingly to him, considered Okonkwo as his father, it was Okonkwo, despite loving Ikemefuna as his son, that eventually kill him, during the process of executing Ikemefuna to the gods. This is an act Okonkwo considered necessary, so as not to appear weak to the village eyes.
