Paragraph 49 contributes to the central idea of the story  by giving the readers a reason to believe that their are meat creatures outside our planet who are nothing to fear and making contact is better than being alone. The text says" You're asking me to believe in thinking meat!" The central idea is the basis existence of meat creatures who are friendly and paragraph 49 just justifies to believe in this story for it is better than being alone and fear just limits exploration.
