Proctor rips up the document with all the signatures of people that confessed to seeing the devil. Proctor thwarts Danforth as by ripping up the document. he prevents Danforth from using the document as evidence of witchery and the presence of the devil in the town. This also lets proctor retain his reputation as a good and honest man. While this eventually led to proctor being hanged, he was hanged a christian man, and so was shown respect even in death, unlike those who confessed to save themselves. Proctor saves his reputation and upholds his morals "redeeming" himself in his last moments. The importance of honor and reputation to Proctor is evident when he shouts, "Leave me my name", implying that danforth can take everything for proctor, just let him retain his morals, honor, sense or justice and reputation.
