LISA: In The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is shunned by her community because she has an affair and a child out of wedlock. It shows that her community is hypocritical, because they act all righteous and moralbut they have no compassion for her. ERNESTO: I don't think I agree. I think they're just acting according to the morality of their religion , which says that you have to conformand she doesn't so there's no place for her. Those are the rules. NINA: What's kind of funny is that because there is no place for her, and she's cast out, she really starts thinking for herself. She becomes a kind of philosopher . VIVIAN: Right.
