Personal choice is a basic value of US citizenship. School choice gives citizens the opportunity to act on that principle by allowing public school students to attend private charter schools. In 2017, a Harvard University study reported that over three million students in the US attend charter schools. According to NPR, there are more than seven thousand charter schools that educate these students, and many more are opened each year. That same study says that charter schools make up “a third of U. S. News and World Report’s top 100 high schools.” Charter schools such as Success Yes! have high success rates in graduation, test scores, and college acceptance. Vouchers allow students to attend better schools by giving families freedom to choose for themselves and to exercise their equal-opportunity rights. A 2018 article reported the closure of all ECOT charter schools in Ohio, which forced six thousand students to find new schools. A 2016 article stated that some charter schools were combining with religious organizations to include a religious curriculum for students. This is against tax laws for public school funding. A 2013 study by Stanford University reported that charter school students were receiving significantly fewer hours of instruction in reading and math than public school students. How does the author use the character of the nurse to develop the social issue of gender inequality? the nurse’s willingness to take care of nora when nora was little demonstrates a woman’s ability to do difficult work. the nurse’s need to give up a child in order to have a job demonstrates a woman’s inability to support herself. the fact that the nurse’s child wrote to her as a young girl and as an adult demonstrates a woman’s ability to keep friends forever. the nurse’s assurance to nora that her children ask for her often demonstrates women’s role in health care.
