Review what makes an effective thesis statement

Figurative language is language that alters the usual meanings of words. It uses an object that is familiar to describe something that may be unfamiliar.

Examples include simile, metaphor, personification, etc.

Literal language is language that follows the actual or dictionary meaning.

Example: We have come to Washington to make our concerns known.

Connotative language is language that includes words that have additional images or emotions associated with them.

Example: We have come to Washington on this summer day with our passion, our belief, and our determination, and we will not leave until our chains are removed and our voices heard.

Example: We have come to Washington to claim our rightful place at America’s table of opportunity and prosperity.

Martin Luther King's purpose for this letter was to respond to the criticism he received

from the public and also from the eight white religious leaders, his intended audience

was his fellow clergy. I would say the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” is made up of

persuasive writing that takes advantage of ethos, pathos, and logos in order to

convince the readers to take MLK's side during the American civil rights movement.

Martin Luther King's main claim in “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, is to promote the

urgent need for and biblical soundness of nonviolent protest/A claim is the main

argument of an essay.

A thesis statement is meant to focus your ideas into one or two sentences. It should be able to present the topic of your paper as well as, make a comment about what your position is in relation to the topic. Your thesis statement should tell your reader what the paper is about and also help guide your writing and keep your argument focused.
