How does character motivation affects a storys plot

Depending on what motivates the protagonist will determine how they behave later in the story. If what motivates them is of poor taste than they are probably going to have a lot of downfalls and make a lot of poor decisions and in turn have to deal with their actions and the concequences that come with them later in the book.
