In 1878, Albert Pope was ready to launch the American bicycle industry with his own Columbia brand of high wheelers. But building bicycles was only half the battle. Pope knew that he also had to build a market by raising the excitement level of the American people for his product. He accomplished this on several fronts, starting with the written word. Pope imported the best cycling articles and pamphlets from England and distributed them to potential customers. He encouraged American author Charles E. Pratt to write The American Bicycler, a handbook for cyclists, and gave away thousands of copies after it was published in 1879.
