Several families, including the Shuttlesworths, decided to participate. Arnetta was eleven years old then, and her father wanted her and her sister Joan to integrate a white school, too. The girls panicked. "We were little chickens," Arnetta said. "We cried and thought it was so unfair. We wanted no part of it."
