You probably think that watching television makes a person less intelligent. Well,
it's not true. People who watch television are, in fact, more informed about the
world. Subjects of a study who regularly watched the Social Studies Channel
answered, on average, 10 percent more questions correctly on a multiple-choice
history test than those who didn't watch that channel. Some people might say
that multiple-choice tests don't tell much about a person's historical knowledge.
They are wrong. There is only one year that Abraham Lincoln signed the
Emancipation Proclamation, and that is 1863. It is easy to find out if someone
knows the right year or not using a multiple-choice test. Also, some people say
you shouldn't watch commercials on TV, because they are a waste of time.
Actually, commercials help you know what new products are out there to buy.
That is useful knowledge, especially if you are in the market to buy a new video
game or type of gum, for instance. People who watch TV are smart, but you
probably already know that.
