General Zaroff is the antagonist of the novel who has a knack for hunting humans who wash up on his shore. He even lures people on to the shore to hunt them but his convenience catches up to him and he has a change of heart.

He does not want to go back to his old ways when the protagonist is caught by him but he falls into his vices again and tries to kill them.

This time he fails and gets killed by the protagonist Rainsford who kills him in his own chambers and then feeds him to the dogs. If he had let go of his desire he would be able to live and atone.
