Why does Nolka refer to the Chenoo as “Grandfather”? She misses her grandfather, who had protected her in the woods. She is confused about who he is because of his appearance. She is trying to be bold to show that she is not afraid of him. She is trying to trick him into seeing her as a person instead of a meal.
