Sam has entered the wilderness with a penknife, a ball of cord (string), an ax, $40, and a piece of flint and steel. What 5 items would you bring into the wilderness if you decided to run away as Sam did. Why would you bring each of those items in particular? You can only bring one item that Sam brought. The other 4 must be your own ideas. Think hard about the reasons why you're bringing those items. Telling me because they will help you is not strong enough, so be specific. I would bring an ax, as Sam did, because it is an extremely versatile tool that could be used to forage the materials necessary to build a shelter, to hunt for food, or to defend myself from potential predators.  

I would bring a first aid kit because survival in its entirety stems from personal health.  I absolutely must have the means to treat potential injuries if I am to survive in the wilderness.

I would bring a metal pot, as it could be used to prepare food or boil and purify potable water.  

I would bring rope, as it could be used to store food a safe distance from the ground, set snares, traverse difficult terrain, or fasten supports when building shelter.  

I would bring a compass, as rescue is not certain and I may need to navigate toward civilization.
