A computer vision monitoring system called Poseidon is helping lifeguards save people from drowning in pools, using an amazing state-of-
the-art technology. First, an advanced camera network and specialized software are installed. An overhead camera above and underwater
binocular cameras below the water survey and detect objects in the pool. Then the camera transmits these images to a computer. 5Next, the
computer analyzes the images in real time and the trajectories of the swimmers. When the cameras capture images of objects that are sinking
or have sunk, the software determines whether the object is a potential victim. "It sends a signal to a large LED display outside the pool, which
activates an alarm or transmits it to a pager worn by the lifeguard. In both cases, the signal alerts the lifeguard of the location of the victim.
SThen the lifeguard can dive in to help the victim within the next ten seconds. 1° By increkfing the speed of rescues, the Poseidon system will
save more swimmers and prevent brain damage from lengthy deprivation of oxygen.
