“Freeway 280” by Lorna Dee Cervantes and “Once in a Lifetime” by Jhumpa Lahiri are heavily influenced by the writers’ cultural upbringing. Both literary works use words from their respective cultures (Chicana in Cervantes’s case and Bengali in Lahiri’s case) and mix it with conventional English. Both authors also seek to better understand their identity and culture through their writing.
