Although founded on a premise of peace, the Peace Corps has had major opponents and has come under scrutiny and controversy. Initially, opponents did not feel that American young people who were drawn to this cause were equipped to live in these types of conditions. Others thought this was a way out for draft-dodgers. Unfortunately, at the beginning, safety issues involving some tragic and deadly situations almost caused the dissolution of the organization. As a result of the tragedies in the beginning, safety has become a prime factor over the years. Much research is conducted on the areas chosen for work places so safety issues can be addressed.
