Elephants were being hunted in large numbers for their
ivory tusks. Realizing that the species was becoming
endangered, most countries outlawed the sale and trade of
ivory and ivory products. This had the unintended outcome
of making ivory much more expensive. People wanted this
increasingly rare and valuable trophy. Poachers, tempted
by huge payouts, became more aggressive, and the
elephant slaughter actually increased.
