They basically used a nation's vulnerability and fear for their gain. They also wanted people to stop listening to music, going to movies, dancing, smoking, etc. Their main argument was that God will send another earthquake to punish them all. Taliban used the fact that many people had no education, to follow the dictates of the religious leaders.
