1. good morning teachers, students, and distinguished alumni— you all for joining me on this momentous occasion. i’m mayor kenndrick, and i’m thrilled to announce the launch of wessex county’s first community garden here at south falls high school. this magnificent project is funded by a grant from green planet organics as part of their gardens grow great communities program. we’re so appreciative of their commitment to this amazing program.

2. you might be wondering why we’re planting a garden at a high school. unfortunately, recent statistics show that most high school students spend too much time indoors. we’re all guilty of wasting time in front of the computer or television when we could be outside getting fresh air and exercise. most of you probably think that exercise involves running laps or spending hours inside a gym. in reality, exercising can be something as simple as planting seeds or pulling out weeds. anything that gets your blood flowing is good for you and your body.

3. gardening has many therapeutic benefits. this program affords students the opportunity to commune with nature as part of a new curriculum that combines environmental science and physical education. spending time in a garden also forges a connection between you and your natural habitat, enhancing your appreciation for the environment. this community garden will also facilitate social interaction between students and community members as they work toward a common goal.

4. i’m sure many of you are familiar with the african proverb made famous by hillary clinton when she quoted it in 1996: “it takes a village to raise a child.” well, i believe that a simple vegetable garden can have the same effect on a community by invigorating and strengthening social bonds. the vegetables raised in this garden will benefit your community in countless ways. the cafeteria workers will use some of the vegetables to create a healthier lunch menu for students and faculty members. the nutrients and antioxidants in vegetables can eliminate toxins from the body while revitalizing the immune system. this means fewer sick days for students and teachers—probably to the dismay of some students.

5. we’ll donate the rest of the food to local soup kitchens and community food banks. this will ensure that all community members have access to the fresh fruits and vegetables necessary for a nutritious diet. this program will also the environment by cutting down on the amount of fruits and vegetables your community imports from large agricultural communities. eating locally grown food can drastically decrease the amount of fossil fuels released into the environment by reducing the need to ship in fruits and vegetables via tractor-trailers. in addition, the plants that you grow will improve air quality by removing harmful toxins such as carbon dioxide from the air.

6. now, it’s time to take action. we need dedicated volunteers to get this garden growing! even if you’ve never handled a trowel in your life, we’re asking for your assistance. we have a number of horticultural experts here to , so don’t feel intimidated! we need your to make this garden great!
