milly turned on her heel and marched straight down the third-floor hallway, not even noticing the stares of her classmates as her shoes clinked and clanked all the way to the stairway. never before had milly been so humiliated, so dismissed, so unappreciated!
at the other end of the hall, where milly had just stormed off from, jamal stood staring at the bulletin board in utter disbelief. in front of him, pinned to the discolored cork, dimpled from decades of notices and announcements, read the words, "cabaret host - jamal smith. he did it! he had gotten the lead role in this year's spring cabaret. but why was milly so upset?
jamal looked down on the notice. "stage manager - milly warren."
it was clear now. last year, milly had performed "ain't we got fun" to a packed house. she hit every note perfectly, spinning and twirling effortlessly, rousing the crowd to their feet. it was agreed upon by everyone that milly stole the show and that this year, without any doubt, milly would get the lead role of host. jamal couldn't but feel sorry for milly's disappointment.
mr. curran stepped out of the rehearsal room and asked jamal why he looked so upset. when jamal explained about milly, mr. curran assured jamal that he was the best person for the lead this year.
