the blueberry is one of north america's native fruits. the continent produces 90 percent of the world's blueberries. harvest time runs from mid-april to the beginning of october. july is the height of the season. in the united states, it is known as national blueberry month.

many tasty dishes can be made from blueberries, including pies, breads, jellies, and jams. top your morning cereal with some fresh blueberries. or serve them by themselves or mixed with other fruit and pour on cream, milk, or yogurt. they are wonderful to eat fresh off the stem too.

history of the blueberry

american indians showed early settlers where to find wild blueberries. they may have brought a dessert called sautauthig to the first feast in the 1600s. this pudding is made from dried blueberries, cracked corn, and water.

in the early 1900s, elizabeth white and dr. frederick coville began to farm wild highbush blueberries. later, plant breeders developed the new kinds of larger, hardy berries that you see in grocery stores. you can still find wild blueberries, often in hilly or mountainous areas.
