Today, i my mother gather food for our evening meal. we left the village to search in the nearby forest. we filled two baskets with beautiful berries, some roots, and seeds. these will go well with the salmon my brothers caught in the river earlier today. they used the dugout canoe they built with father last week.
mother and father remind us often that we should be for the cedar trees. with them, we can build our houses. our houses are long and made of cedar planks. the roofs are made from cedar bark. it keeps the rain out. the women of the village can even make clothes like skirts and raincoats from the bark. they pound it to make it into shreds first.
tomorrow, my father and uncles will head to the mountains to hunt. they hope to bring back a deer or a bear. this would give the family more food to smoke for winter provisions. the deer hide would be good for making shoes. the bear fur would be wonderful to have for a winter cape. and i could add a bear claw to my shell necklace.
