Logos is an appeal to logic. JFK uses it in his inagural presidential speech when he points out the problems at the time: colonial rule, alliances formed among the other countries of North America, and the Cold War with Russia. JFK is logical when he explains how he plans to fix these problems. For example: “We shall not always expect to find them supporting our view. But we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom.” In this quote he realistically looks at the situations colonies have and explains that they can still be free.

Ethos is an appeal to credibility and ethics.Ethos is present in this speech sprinkled in different phrases to make him sound more credible. “but because it is right” , “we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends” “let every other power know that this Hemisphere intends to remain the master of its own house” He calls upon morals of what is right versus wrong.

Pathos is an appeal to feelings .The final stage in JFK’s strong inaugural address is his use of pathos, “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country.” . With this one sentence, JFK empowers the people of America to change the world and hightens their pride for their country leaving them with a feeling of hope.
