Read this passage:
a number of events from earlier years contributed to the
great depression. first, people started making more
money. during these prosperous times, people bought
large numbers of goods, and many more goods were
produced - ultimately more than there were people who
could afford them. banks and stores extended credit to
people with lower incomes, with no regard for whether the
borrowers would be able to pay back the loans. some
people used borrowed money to purchase stock in
companies. finally, when the stock market crashed, these
people lost money they had borrowed - and since the
loans could not be repaid, banks failed in droves.
