Someone I have had a positive role with is my older brother, who is 4 years older then me. Being open and truthful has a big role in having a positive relationship. Being open with your partner, lover or not helps a lot with communication and being able to trust each other. As for truthfulness, it is important because if you are constantly lying to your partner or yourself it can lead to major conflicts and trust issues breaking the relationship because one or both partners are constantly worried about if there partner is telling the truth.
