Read this excerpt from "not a dove, but no longer a hawk." i remember distinctly the thrill of climbing aboard a u. s. army helicopter in the cool of the morning and taking off across the rice fields with a south vietnamese battalion for a day’s jousting with the vietcong guerillas. i was proud of the young american pilots sitting at the controls in the cockpit and i was grateful for the opportunity to witness this adventure and to report it. we are fighting now, i used to think, and some day we will triumph and this will be a better country. based on this excerpt, it can be inferred that the war provides the author with his first flying experience. the author once felt pride and optimism about the war. the us soldiers are trained in hand-to-hand combat. the author has a begrudging respect for the vietcong.

Read this excerpt from "hope, despair and memory" and answer the question. and yet it is surely human to forget, even to want to forget. the ancients saw it as a divine gift. indeed if memory us to survive, forgetting allows us to go on living. how could we go on with our daily lives, if we remained constantly aware of the dangers and ghosts surrounding us? the talmud tells us that without the ability to forget, man would soon cease to learn. without the ability to forget, man would live in a permanent, paralyzing fear of death. only god and god alone can and must remember everything. which of the following is true about the above excerpt? ethos is used in reference to “dangers and ghosts.” logos is used in saying all men forget and want to forget, because the talmud also praised forgetting. ethos is used in referring to the ancients, the talmud, and god. pathos is used without loaded language.

What is the effect of narrator's word choice on the tone of this passage? the words "my heart shrank within itself" create a fearful tone. the words "wounded his fellow" develop a remorseful tone. the words "struck harsh upon my ears" suggest an irritated tone. the words "better-omened" set a hopeful tone. excerpt from "the cabuliwallah" by rabindranath tagore i was sitting in my study, looking through the accounts, when some one entered, saluting respectfully, and stood before me. it was rahmun the cabuliwallah. at first i did not recognise him. he had no bag, nor the long hair, nor the same vigour that he used to have. but he smiled, and i knew him again. "when did you come, rahmun? " i asked him. "last evening," he said, "i was released from jail." the words struck harsh upon my ears. i had never before talked with one who had wounded his fellow, and my heart shrank within itself when i realised this; for i felt that the day would have been better-omened had he not turned up.
