tomorrow was the day. carla had to stand up in front of the whole school at assembly
and explain her club’s project. carla had started the project, which was collecting
bottles and cans, returning them for money, and sending the money to a clean water
nonprofit group working in angola. carla was proud of the project, which had already
earned more than $200. but she was terrified of talking in front of all those people!
when her teacher, mrs. hu, her prepare at recess, carla only grew more
nervous. mrs. hu meant well, but, for carla, everything she said seemed to suggest
one more thing that could go wrong.
on her way home, her friend mia noticed that carla was not herself. “what’s wrong? ”
she asked.
carla nearly broke down in tears as she explained how worried she was about
addressing the whole school tomorrow.
“carla,” mia soothed, “it’s easier than you think. there are just two things you have to
do. first, look over the tops of everyone’s heads. people will think you are looking at
them, but instead, you won’t see anyone. it’ll be just like you’re talking to an empty
room. second, if you do see someone, just visualize them as a corn plant, a rock, or
whatever! that way, they won’t make you nervous.”
when carla got up to speak the next day, at first her voice quivered and cracked. she
had to start over three times. then she caught jason giovanni looking amused. “zap,”
she thought to herself as she invisibly turned him into a corn plant. then she looked
over his head and went on talking.
after that, talking to the empty room wasn’t bad. she got through her presentation after
all and most people understood what she said.
