history of the frisbee

the history of the frisbee name has been traced to the frisbie baking company (1871-1958) of bridgeport, connecticut, which made pies that were sold to many new england colleges. hungry college students soon discovered that the empty pie tins could be tossed and caught, providing endless hours of game and sport. they called this “frisbie-ing.” these pie tins were the first flying discs used as toys. the first plastic discs were introduced in 1958 under the name pluto platter. in the 1960s, richard knerr, whose company manufactured the pluto platter, was watching some college students playing with pluto platters in connecticut when he heard about the pie-plate throwing tradition and borrowed the name (with a little different spelling) for his pluto platters. that’s how the frisbee flying disc came to have its name.
