dear editor,
lately, many people have complained about a new neighborhood law that has recently gone into effect. the law requires that people have all dogs on a leash unless they are safely within a fenced yard or in the house. most people are following the new law, but a few go out walking and let their dogs run freely along with them. some let their dogs run freely throughout the neighborhood all day and all night. i would like to encourage these people to begin respecting the leash law. if they will think about it, they will understand why keeping a dog on a leash is a good idea. for one thing, dogs on a leash won't be able to leave unwelcome messes in innocent neighbors' yards. also, some of our neighbors are frightened of dogs. none of them should have to be afraid to go out for an evening walk if they want to. most important, dogs on a leash can't run out into the street in front of cars. responsible, loving pet owners should be happy to do all they can to keep their animals safe. next time any of you think of sending your dog out into the neighborhood with no leash, stop a minute to think about the chance you're taking with your neighbors and your pets!
sincerely,
mr. john nabors

Read this passage: there were old, half-rotten vegetables; bones from the evening meal, covered in white sauce that had gone hard; a few raisins and almonds; some cheese that gregor had declared inedible two days before; a dry roll and some bread spread with butter and salt. "am i less sensitive than i used to be, then? ", he thought, and was already sucking greedily at the cheese which had immediately, almost compellingly, attracted him much more than the other foods on the newspaper. quickly one after another, his eyes watering with pleasure, he consumed the cheese, the vegetables and the sauce; the fresh foods, on the other hand, he didn't like at all, and even dragged the things he did want to eat a little way away from them because he couldn't stand the smell. kafka, the metamorphosis (david wyllie, trans.) what can you infer about gregor from this excerpt? a. he enjoys disturbing his family by making a lot of noise. b. he is upset at being locked in the room and tries to escape. c. he is becoming less human and more like a bug. d. he is depressed and is trying to hurt himself.
