In Chapter 14, we see that Okonkwo has recovered significantly. He was welcomed by his kinsmen in his motherland, and he was able to start a farm again. However, Okonkwo is discouraged. He works at his farm, but is upset about the knowledge that he will never be a lord of the clan.

These feelings of defeat and disappointment build on the idea of pride, which is so important for Okonkwo. Uchendu tries to make him feel better, by reminding him that eveyone goes through bad times during their lifetime, and that it is good to find refuge within our families. Okonkwo seems unable not only to put his pride aside, but to reconcile with his "motherland," with caring for his family, with loving his wife, and various other feelings that he considers "feminine."

Later in these chapters, we see that Okonkwo is doing better, but he is now troubled by the news of the arrival of white men. He is particularly worried when he hears that Nwoye might be spending time with Christian missionaries.
