But after he was stolen and sold, Buck learned the tricks and trade of living by himself - trusting no-one and fighting for his own survival. In the end, he went from a lazy pet, to an alert, aware, wild dog. After John Thornton dies, he is finally wild and free, tied down to no human. And he is free to explore and adventure.
