When things are placed in an order that is in the same order of when they happened, this is called chronological order.  When an author uses chronological order, this is called chronology.  When using chronology, it is important to let readers know so immediately so they can begin to picture a time frame established.  In this particular excerpt, this is what the author does as the author begins with the words “Before modern helmets, in 1904.”  Thus, we can see that the author will begin to discuss things in relation to the occurrence of a particular event--beginning prior to the invention of the modern helmet.
