This excerpt from the book "Grendel" by American author John Gardner characterizes it main character as C - Upset and Confused. This can be deduced from the paragraph. The character Grendel is talking in first person, he says he fled torn apart (hinting confusion), but also whimpering, crying (meaning he was upset and out of control). When he says he gnashed his teeth and clutched the sides of his head it is an example for how upset he was feeling.

The answer cannot be humorous and comical. When it says ridiculous hairy creature it is meant as an attack on himself and is not said for comic purposes. Nothing else in the text hints to it being comical.

The option of violent and dangerous could be considered since he starts talking about himself as a beast, but from everything else in the text we can say that Grendel never attacks verbally anyone, just himself. So the answer is not violent and dangerous.

And there's nothing in the text to hint to Grendel being weak and sickly. The paragraph says that he was torn apart by poetry, and poetry can't make you physically sick.
