Vera is the fifteen year old niece of Mr and Mrs Sappleton. She has a inherent talent for weaving exaggerated, mysterious tales with a tragic background.

On learning that Mr Framton does not know any member of the Sappleton family, she fabricates a tragic tale about the hunting party comprising of the Sappleton men and their dog. She mixes fictional events along with approaching ones and focuses them around the open window to create an unnerving tale.
