Why was the compagnia della misericordia important during the bubonic plague?

It was a brotherhood who tended to the needy.  These movements expanded in Europe and they were instrumental during the Black Death.  As it struck and killed thousands, these fraternities were active as they volunteered their services in helping the sick during this dark period in Europe’s history.
