Many adventures and events happen to this character as his life moves along, one of which is the change in his relationship with Mitchell, another one of the characters, and who at the beginning seems to be the antagonist. It is not until much later that Paul and Mitchell grow to become the best of friends and allies.

In this particular excerpt, Hammond and George, who are Paul´s oldest brothers, go to Mitchell to talk to him and end up demanding that Mitchell leave Paul alone. Later on, after that scene, the problems between the two continue until a deal is struck between the two children and thereafter change completely when Paul protects Mitchell from the consequences of injuring one of Paul´s father´s priced horses.
