Its primary purpose is to explain the ancient beginnings of humans, which would be why they are so similar. Since courage is among their virtues, the Maori narrate their myth with courage as the central focus.

Both myths show that respect for one's family is highly valued in their cultures. In the creation myth of the Maori, for instance, we find the following excerpt:
