My mother blushed and admitted her baby's real name to the group. her mother in-law had recently died, she apologized, and her husband had insisted that the first daughter be named after his mother, mauran. my mother thought it the ugliest name she had ever heard, and she talked my father into what she believed was an improvement, a combination of mauran and her own mother’s name, felicia. “her name is mao-ree-shee-ah,” my mother said to the group of women. “why, that’s a beautiful name,” the new mothers cried. “moor-ee-sha, moor-ee-sha,” they cooed into the pink blanket. moor-ee-sha it was when we returned to the states eleven years later. sometimes, american tongues found even that mispronunciation tough to say and called her maria or marsha or maudy from her nickname maury. i pitied her. what an awful name to have to transport across borders! which main idea is conveyed in this passage? a name can keep an individual from fitting into a new culture. a name has no influence on an individual’s identity. a name can connect an individual with her family and culture. a name determines an individual’s entire existence.

What does the author see as the main cause for why students don’t really see shakespeare as a real, flawed human being? we shouldn’t shy away from discussing our literary heroes’ flaws. if nothing else, the knowledge of their failures us appreciate what success and greatness these authors did achieve. often our hero-worship keeps us from truly seeing the complexity of a great author. thus, i would argue, nothing would be better for high school students than to take shakespeare down a peg or two. a) the fact that students never learn enough about shakespeares biography b) the fact that students only read shakespeare’s comedies while in school c) the fact that students are never assigned to read any shakespeare while in high school d) the fact that students only read shakespeare’s greatest works in school and thus never see his weaknesses

Read the passage first of all if someone says your dream is impossible, they’re wrong. you can’t prove that something is impossible-all you know is that[it] hasn’t been done yet. people said no one could scale mount everest but in 1953, sir edmund hilary and tenzing norway gazed down upon the world from it’s summit. people said that man could not fly, but in 1903, orville and wilbur wright made the first sustained powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine. people said, “okay, we admit that someone could climb mount everest, and we admit that man has learned to fly, but no one will ever, ever walk on the face of the moon.” if we can send three men a quarter of a million miles away and bring them home safely, is there any great task we cannot accomplish? which identifies the textual evidence that best supports the claim: the authors purpose is to persuade? a: the author shares historical information about the wright brothers. b: the author states that men have walked the moon. c: the author states that others who think your dreams are impossible are wrong. d: the author wants to know what tasks we cannot accomplish.
