How does george explain lennie’s being simple-minded to the boss? is this the truth?

George told the boss that a horse kicked Lennie in the head when he was younger. The idea of being mentally challenged isn’t easy to understand so George thought that a simple explanation to the boss would be enough so they can retain their jobs. Of course, it was a lie.

George misleads the manager in such a case that he understands that Lennie's psychological insufficiency is a danger they won't land the position. George lies and tells the manager that Lennie is his cousin, and that they left the activity in Weed since it was finished.
